How Did Credit Cards Start?
The Babylon and Egyptians established the idea of credit more than 3000 years
ago. In the early 1700's there was an advertisement for furniture that you

20th century there were "tallymen" who sold clothes that you could pay off on a
weekly basis. They kept a "tally" of what you paid and what you owed by using
markings on a stick. In a way this was a more simplistic form of layaway. In
the 1920’s, cards used for credit was established by individual business owners
like gas stations and grocery stores as a more formal way of “putting it on my
tab”. The first “plastic money” came around 1950 when the Diner’s Club allowed
around 200 customers the use of a plastic card as payment for restaurants
around the New York area. Soon American Express followed and then before you
know it bank issued credit cards sprang up and by 1976 a little company called
Visa was born.
