Credit Card Applications
So you have decided to apply for a new credit card. You have done your research
and you know what type of incentives and interest rate you can qualify for and
which credit card company fits your needs. This is important because when you
are ready to apply for the credit card, you want to apply to as few cards as
possible. This will help keep your credit report clean and hopefully help keep
your credit score high. You can shop for different types of cards on-line or by
opening the applications that get sent to you through your home mail.
Privacy and Security Section
Most applications are very similar, so you should look for the following
whether it is through the Internet or a physical paper application. You should
look for a privacy and security protection section. This is imperative to read
and ensures that you are not giving away important information to someone who
may abuse it. Make sure you read this section and understand what information
they will keep to themselves and what information they may give to other
companies. If you do not fully understand this, your personal stats may be used
for purposes you are not comfortable with. The nice part about the security
section is that you know your most valuable information (i.e. your social
security number) will not be used for negative purposes like fraud.
Personal Information
Next, you will be asked most or all of the following: Your name, address, phone
number, social security number and date of birth. This is basic information all
applications need. Then they will ask more specific questions like how long
have you been at your residence, what is your mortgage/rent per month, where do
you work, how long have you been there and how much do you make? Be prepared to
answer some or all of these questions when filling out an application and make
sure you are comfortable giving this information away.
Terms and Agreements
Finally, they will ask you if you read their terms and agreement section and
then you will have to check a box or sign your name saying you agree to their
terms. Please read through this material. It will be long and it will probably
be boring, but you will fully understand the ins and outs of how your card
works. You will know what rewards you will get for having a good credit
relationship with the card like low rates, points toward rewards and any other
possible incentives. And, you will know what will happen to your rate or
incentives if you may miss a pay cycle or go over your limit. Understanding the
terms and agreements that are given to you on the credit card application will
save you money and grief over an extended period of time.
